Sweet news of the last decade – the transport, metabolism and regulating role of sugars. Białystok, April 14, 2007

The thematic symposium of PSEPB „Sweet news of the last decade – the transport, metabolism and regulating role of sugars” took place on April 14, 2007, in Bialystok. Symposium was organized by Dr. Iwona Ciereszko, head of the Department of Plant Physiology in the Institute of Biology, University of Bialystok. The session, which was held in the new auditorium of the University Library named by Jerzy Giedroyć, was attended by about 40 participants.

Following lectures were presented: Dr. I. Ciereszko – “Sugars as signaling molecules – hexokinase as a intracellular receptor in the plants”, Prof. H. Gabrys – “May sugars regulate the movement of cellular organelles?”, Prof. P. Sowinski – “Long distance transport of sugars – the mechanism and involvement in the integration of plant functions”, Dr. S. Orzechowski – “What’s new in the metabolism of starch?”, and sponsors lectures: presentation of an Olympus microscope, Rafał Socha – “Fluoview FV1000 – a system of many possibilities”, offers for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology by Merck (Dr. Karina Błachnio). Participants of the symposium, in addition to interesting lectures, had the opportunity to admire the panorama of the city, bathed in spring sunshine, from the terrace of a building.

The next day, a trip to the Biebrza National Park was organized. Tour participants were impressed by the beautiful landscapes, glittering in the sun and the Biebrza and Narwia backwaters and wet meadows with flowering Marsh Marigold.
